This is the 3rd activity in the Maximum Impact Sequence. In this activity students will learn about career goals. Students should be able to complete this activity almost 100% self-guided. It could be done in class, or assigned as independent work. This activity should take you 20-30 minutes to set up and should take students 25 minutes to complete.
Learning Objectives
Students should be able to:
- Set their first career goal
- Complete their first assignment
- Reflect on their goals
Materials
Students:
- Internet-connected computer
Instructors:
- Internet-connected computer
Advanced Preparation
No advanced preparation is required.
Begin the activity
Step 1: Email instructions to your students
To assign the activity to your students, email them:
- This web page for the activity plan
- Ask your students to share a reflection (usually a short 1-5 sentence written response to a prompt)
- Instructions on how you'd like to receive their reflections
- Reflection prompt (ie: How has setting your career goal made you think differently?)
- A reminder that they should keep track of their reflections so that they can read them later which will help them for their Project Status Reports and the "growth" portion of their Final Presentation.
Example email:
Step 2: Set up a CareerVillage Assignment to track student completion
If you create an "Assignment" in CareerVillage, you will be able to track which students edited their career goals statement from your dashboard. This makes tracking student completion of the activity much easier.
Because Assignments on CareerVillage trigger email notifications to students, we recommend setting up the Assignment after you email the students instructions (Step 1 above).
- Go to your Educator Dashboard
- Create an assignment with type: Career Goal Statement
- Assignment description (example copy): Think about what you want to be doing in the next few years. Write your Career Goal Statement. If you have more than one, simply add them to the same text box. Remember, if you need some help brainstorming, feel free to take some time to discuss with a family member, friend, or classmate about your personal interest areas and try to weave them into your professional goal(s). Don't forget to send your reflection after you complete the assignment.
Background Knowledge
- Instructors should be aware of what career questions on CareerVillage.org look like, and that they will get answered by real working professionals in the days and weeks after they are first posted.
- Additional resources: The educator resource page is available here.
Assessment
- Formative: Instructor should collect student reflections (by email or any other method)
